DIY + Dad: The Fireplace
I love DIY projects and this is one that my Dad and I took on this past summer. We worked for six days on the project and I am pretty sure my Dad will never help me with another “simple” project again! The plan was for him to be the project foreman and I would learn the A-Z’s of custom tile work from the master… little did I know that my Dad and I suffer from the same control issues! It was a nice time spent with my Dad, I learned a ton, and I actually contributed a lot of work on the fireplace. Everything perfect about he fireplace was my Dad’s work, and everything just a little off was my creative novice at work! The wood mantel and hearth wrap-a-round was done by my husband. We picked out the wood together which is an Ambrosia Maple. It is a beautiful wood. I waited so long to post this project because we weren’t sure if we were going to try and stain the wood a bit darker or not. After many stain samples we finally decided to let it be natural… and so it is…
I was shooting for a Rustic/ Modern design… I know, two opposing ideas, but if people can have Industrial/ Farmhouse… I figured I could have Rustic/ Modern.
I love how it turned out! It is natural and light, but has a crisp clean line. The roughness of the mosaic and the natural wood give it a rustic feel while the clean lines and stainless accents give it the modern feel I was going for… plus I think of my Dad every time I look at it!
